Hello class!
In chapter two, Annemarie saddens because she remembers her older sister before her death in an accident. There are many things that the girls still don't understand, they ask for fancy food sometimes, but their mothers explain them about the rations caused by war.
The stories that Mr. Johansen tells Annemarie reveal one of the central themes of the book: Bravery. She understands there must be a balance between being brave and having fears.
Later on, in chapter 3, September goes on quietly, but the girls realize that the Germans are closing stores owned by Jews. Annemarie analyzes if she would be capable of dying to protect the Jews.
