Number the Stars - Chapter 1

Hello class!

As level 3 students, you are now able to read a book like "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry.
Lowry wrote the book in 1988. She was inspired by a friend who had grown up in Denmark during World War II, when the country was occupied by Nazi Germany. At that time, Jewish people all over Europe were being arrested and then killed by Germans. In Denmark the Danish people banded together to save their Jewish population.

To start with this blog, please fill out your entry with the following information:
  1. Would you ever be willing to risk your life for another person? Under what circumstances might you take that risk?
  2. Why were the girls afraid of the soldiers? Have you ever been afraid of soldiers?
  3. If you were their mother, what would you have done in that case?
  4. Find Denmark in the European map and write at least 3 reasons why the author might have chosen to locate the story there.

Important vocabulary for this first reading:

contempt [k@n tempt5] n. feeling of scorn toward a person or thing

exasperated [ig zas5p@ ra$t2@d] adj. extremely annoyed

imperious [im pe$r5e$ @s] adj. bossy or bullying in an arrogant way

intricate [in5tri kit] adj. very detailed

sabotage [sab5@ ta# zh2] n. destruction of property or interference with activities as a part of an
effort against an enemy

Remember that opinions cannot be exactly the same.

  1. 1. If I would be willing to risk my life for another person if that person were my family for example my mother I would give my life for her without thinking, I would do every thing possible to make my mother happy under any circumstances.❤️

    2. The two older sisters race ahead, but their run is cut short when they encounter two soldiers, turns out the soldiers are Germans-Nazis, the soldiers have a bunch of questions for the girls and Annemarie tries to take the lead, she and Ellen are scared, but the little Kirsti doesn't seem to be. Luckily, the soldiers think Kirsti ir cute and so let the three girls continue on their way.
I have never been afraid of soldiers.

    3. That they stay away from danger, that they didn't approach the soldiers because I didn't know that intentions these soldiers could have with them.

    4. Because the country is very small and can't defend itself from an attack, that's why the Germans invaded it filling it with weapons, fear and wars.!

  3. 1. of course I have two reasons, my children the are everithing to me, if they life depends of my life I don´t have to think it to give my life for them, it doesen´t matter the reason the are my priority and all my desitions is because of them, I love them so much.

    2. The wirls was so scare because they know what the soldiers do in the corners, and they thought in someting bad is going to happend, but they felt a little better when the girafe mencion something about her little girl. I think the soldiers recive orders in general, but a few days ago after elections we saw some soldiers hsving bad intentions and fellings, also other soldiers decide no hurt people in the street even if they know than they have to fallow instrutions; but I never feel scare from a soldier.

    3. if they were my daughters first: that never happend because I went to school whith them and come to pick up them from school too, second: I said them the same, never pass again over that street, third: probably they never go out again during that horrible war.

    4. Denmark is located next to Germany, with the north sea and the Baltic sea, is in the top of the image; I think the autor chose this location (country) because is very close to Germany and it was one of the firts areas in sufer this horror time, probably this place has someting than remind him someting about his family history, other reason was the conection with the events, than all the people who sufer this pass, and almost imposible than you can not feel anything that involucrate your feelings, I think world wr two is a very interesting theme and I like very much.

    1. Name Suyapa Castillo.

Well,if taht personas, were my children my husband, brothers or sisters i could risk my life without thinking.

2)I imagine that those girls were afraid because, first they was running and suddenly the soldiers stoped them and they started to así questions to Annemarie and Ellen. Also because the people knew the problems about their contry.I have never been afraid of soldier.

If i were their mother,i would have to protect them. As a mothers we think many things that can happen to them, they coul be kidnapped, killed por raped.

I thik that the author chosen this locate here, because Her fríend groun here adnd she new very well the problems in that contry, maybe also for the distance between Germán y and Denmark.she also could see very interesting write this history here.

  4. 1. Yes, I would risk my life for anyone I can save; probably under any circumstances if I can do it I would, because I think is something emotional that in a moment of an accident or a dangerous situation you just do what you should do, and don’t think about the consequences.
    2. The girls were afraid of the soldiers because they thought if they said something that can make them angry and something bad will happen to their families and end up in a concentration camp where the Nazis torture and kill people. I never been afraid of the soldiers because I think they don’t want to hurt people so I feel safe when I saw one of them.
    3. I think if I was their mother I would do the same, because in the situation that they were, she wasn’t be able to do anything because she knew the consequences of do something like go to the two soldiers and demand an apology.
    4. Denmark is in top of the map in the north of Germany. I think some of the reasons why the author places her story there are:
    • The II world war history tell us that the Nazis invaded Denmark because of the strategic location and that gives realism to the story.
    • Lois Lowry said that this story is based in a Danish friend’s childhood so Copenhagen was the real place where her friend lived.
    • The history of the Nazi invasion to Denmark has so much to teach us, so a story that takes place there make the readers get involve and curious about what happened there.

  5. 1)Definitely my answer is yes, I would be willing to risk my life for my parents they are everything for me, just as they are for me I'm for them willing to everytjing and against everyone under any circunstance because they are the most important thing un my life.
    2) The girls were afraid when the soldiers started asking question. I have never been afraid of the soldiers because my dad was a policeman and and I looked at uniformed men since I was a little girl.
3)I think what you have to do is keep distance with them because they can expose them selves to more dangers.
4)It was located un a good place, It is small and appropiated for what was needed.

  6. 1. I would be willing to give my life for my children, I do not have them but I will have. I know that for a mother who loves her children she cares more about their happiness than her own life without importing the circumstances in which she finds herself.

    2. The girls are afraid because the soldiers were curious that one of them was different, and they asked many questions. Ellen was Danish and she was afraid that the soldiers would discover her. In my years ago, not, but now with the situation in Honduras, yes.

    3. I will prevent the girls from being in the hands of the soldiers, since they are ordered to capture the Danish, and one has the risk of being arrested for being Danish. I do not want to know that I would not see her again.

    4. Maybe because it is surrounded by large countries, by the World War II in Denmark, resistance for the Danish population, maybe because is near to Germany and the occupation of Germans in Denmark.

  7. 1-yes I would.well
I risk my life for my mother because she is everything to me. and under what circumstance might.well. for examplo she is need of a transplant in an operation. I will take that risk.
2-The girls were afraid of the soldiers. Well
And case of the sister's Annemarie and Ellen they were think the soldeirs wolked quickly not speaking with other person.if they something that can make them angry and where torture and kill.I haven't been afraid of soldiers.
3-I think if I was their mother I would do.well
I think putting distance because in some cases they are aggressive.
4- I think the history of Denmark has much to teach us all.It was located in a small place a group of prejudice free people honored the humanity of others.

  8. 1. Well of course I would risk my life for someone who definitely I love it mainly my family, they are the most important people that I have in my life although I have some people including children that I risk my life for them but I think that if God tell me: you have to risk your life for any person, I know I would think about it and the farthest answer would be "Yes" so, I take the risk If any member of my family is in any serious health or integrity situation.
    2. The girls were afraid of the soldiers because they knew the situation in the place where they lived and that a soldier asked a question to them
it was scary, In my case sometimes I'm be afraid of soldiers for the corruption of the country but I know that I'm sheltered because God protects me all the time.
    3. I think that I have to do it the same, "do nothing" only to protect my family and in her case her daughters because she had in a difficult situation and she couldn't do anything.
    4. -First because they had a war with the germans.
-second a the end of the war their country was invaded by the nazis and they lived a terrible situation.
    - In that country A small elite of soldiers had the power.

  9. 1. well I think that I would risk my life for my family like my niece, my mom, my father and my brother, so I would risk my life for them if they need to help for a disease and If they would need a organ of my body I would give them or other situation like kidnapping, well in conclusion I risk my life if they would need.

    2. Well the girls are afraid when the they found the soldiers and the soldiers started to be very curious and they were more nervous when the soldiers asked them about Annemarie backpack and when touch her bag with his scope.
in my life I never have been afraid about the soldiers rather I get angry seeing them.

3.I believe if I was their mother possible I would have tried of took distance because it would have been less dangerous for them.

4.well i think that it would be because the Nazi attack Denmark and it would be for the author wanted to teach about the relation with the II world war and maybe because the author wanted to discovering about what happen in there countries.

  10. 1. YES I WOUL TRY TO HELP OTHER PERSON MORE, IF SHE IS OR HE IS SOME IMPORTANT TO ME FOR EXAMPLE THE SOLDIER SAID STOP TO HER, AND HE WAS ASKING WHY SHE WAS RUNNING? YOU KNOW THE END IN MY OPINION
I WILL DO THE SAME TRY TO HELP, BECAUSE I PREFER TO RISK MY LIFE, I DON NOT WANNA TO LOST SOME IMPORTANT IN MY LIFE. IT WILL BE SO DIFFICULT TO ME.

2.Well The girls was afraid with the soldier, because "the stupid soldier" he trought more impotant, because he had a weapon for tha t sorry for the bad word, also the soldier touched her hair that was ugly for the girls she felt bad and her was afraid.

now in my opinion I've not had afraid in front a soldier, BUT I'Ve never tried to say somthing bad in front them, because "Chelato said never to know" what it'll happen later

    3. its a good question and It is so difficult to answer, because you remenber two think, the first. IT was. they were living When it was starting the second world war, and the soldiers were afraid too. them are human too. and the mother didn't have anyting to say only becarfull for the time, I do the same.

4.Denmark was adopted by Hitler in function of the invasion Norway, from whose bases the German aviation could easily reach the British Isles. also Both states were neutral and had small armies. Germany justified the action by claiming that, despite being neutral, they were in danger of falling into the hands of the British and French.

  11. 1. Of course, If it's needed to help or save my family I would do it; I'm not very attached to people, but when someone become very close to me I would put my life on risk to save that special one.

    2. I think they were afraid for the situation in what they were living in, the Nazis were killing Jews all over Europe without any rege ... and they were just three childrens stanting in front of two German Soldier with guns, their fear was a natural response, survival instinct; what else could do three little girls in a danger situation like that one?

    3. I would be afraid too, but as Ellen's mother I would try to advise them, her advice was really wise ... in country full of german soldiers without any humanity in them the best you can do is be unnoticed, they must not remind your face

    4. - First that was the original location of the story, the author said it in the book's introduction; So she was trying to be attached to the real story.
    - Denmark is an small country and its only inmmediate borders are the sea and Germany.
    - Denmark is located between Great Britain and Germany, in the 2nd Worl war, Germany and The UK were in two opposites bands; They were enemies, so this makes Denmark and strategi point, Germany should invade them before The UK does.

  12. It depends: who is? because if it is someone I do not know or who I just met I would not give my life for them, but if imy mother is sick and needs something from me to live, I would be willing to give her whatever of my body even if I´ll die

they were scared because they knew that the Nazi soldiers were bad with the Jews and when they found them, they saw them with their weapons and helmets and they probably thought they would do something bad to them. When I see a soldier, I do not feel so scared, but sometimes I think there are hit men who use soldiers' uniforms to kill people, so I do not trust much.

If I had been the mother of those little girls I would not have let them go out alone, because anything could have happened to them.

    * I think to coincide with the story because the war was a real event.
    * And if the war had not been real, the author would probably have chosen that country thinking of the privileged position to carry out any attack of war.
    * He could also have thought of choosing that country imagining that because it is a small country, Someone could invade it without having to fight a big battle.

  15. 1.- Yes, I would. If I can help someone that I love, I would do it without thinking about the risk. Sometimes I have said that if a closer friend or relative needs an organ transplant and I can help them, I would do it.

2.- I think it was beacuse of the sittuation they were living, and because of how the soldiers looked like with the helmets, shiny boots and rifles. And yes, sometime I have been afraid of soldiers, more when I was a child, and I think it was because of their rifles, I don´t like guns and I get afraid when a person have one.

3.- Well, I would feel preocuped too; and like Mrs. Rosen did it, I would say them to walk by another way and try to be surrounded for other people to avoid to be recognized by soldiers.

4.- *Because it is close to Germany.
*The author wanted to show us how was the sittuation in that small place during this world war ll.
    * The author wanted that young readers know the Denmark sittuation during the war, and that they get interest to read another Holocaust lirature about other countries.

  16. 1-. Yes, I would be do that. But I think that I would take the risk just for my mother and my brother's because they're the most important in my life and I believe that many persons would act like me although some persons are more sensible.

2-.the girls were afraid of the soldiers because they talked loud and they were soldiers so the girl's knew what that meant in the times of wars and the girls respected that. Also the soldiers started to ask questions and the girls felt scared.

3-. I think that I would have done it was to talk to the girls about the dangerous that some people would be and in this case with the war nobody were reliable.

4-. The author could choose this place because is more small and is ubicated near of Germany and of the ocean where the nazis had some bases, so the nazis wanted to invade all the countries and the people had afraid because they saw all the horror things thatthe nazis did.

  18. 1.- Definitely YES! I'll willing to risk for my mother's life. I think the mothers' are only persons in our life who love us. In my case she's my reason for life. In our country we can found many circunstances in where I'll safe her life maybe in a assault, accident or when she's sick; I always prefer I'll sick than her. She has problems in her heart and I would like donated my heart for what she feel better but sometimes we don't help too much, but when I remember my nephew, my olders bothers and I imagine a similar situation I'll the risk.

2.- I think the girls were afraid because of many circunstances what in their country were passing. It was a bad momemnt because in this time happened the II World War and that can you remember the war was about the hate of Jewish and when one of soldiers asking: "Why are you running?" she was afraid maybe she thought he was taking with him.
......Well I was be afraid one time. Many years ago I went to a party with my friends and when I'll go home had a military catch. When I stopped my car the soldier said me: Can I saw you driver license and registration? I gave both and he said me: I need you get off your car! and I say NOT, because was a dangerous zone, I didn't drunk and I was alone. I called a military fried and a few minutes he came and the soldier said us: Everything is OK you can go. I scared because in our country not all soldier be good.

3.- It's a difficult question because the country was a lot of problems in that time but maybe I'll traying to said their about the risk whith our life because of II World War and a relation about the Danishs and Jewish and show a differets ways for home and school and said their: Never run again.

4.- *Definitely because Denmark this is border with Germany and the history it's about II World War and presence of Nazi soldiers
*Denmark had a Copenhagen the most important city for it ubication and that time there happened importants things about the history.
*In the introduction the autor said us: " I think the history of Denmark has much to teach us all", as maybe because Denmark was a nation of heroism for all the help about the Danish Resistence when they helped people Jewish.

  19. 1)Obvios yes, I think if I could help someone I love like my mother. I would do it without thinking about it regardless of what it was. I would be willing to risk my life for my family.

    2) I think they were afraid of the soldiers because of the situation in which they were living, in the same way the soldiers wanted to intimidate them with so much question. I do not fear the soldier because they are here to protect us and feel more secure.

    3) I think that if it was her mom, she would have done the same thing because the situation in which they were living would not have allowed me to act in another way, just talk and explain in a not so cruel way what was happening.

    4) I think the author focused more on the Denmark country because it is very close to Germany and also suffered in a shocking way the situation of the || world war.

  22. 1. It is a very difficult question, I think that for the only person who would risk my life would be for my mother, because she really loves me, And she is the only person who would risk and give her life for me
and for whatever reason I would give my life for it, if she needs a vital organ, heart, kidney, lung

    2. I think they were afraid of the way they were told to stop running, Ellen was different, by the way the soldiers talked to them, and for their weapons.

Of course when I was a girl, I was very afraid of soldiers,They never laughed and by the big guns they use
I can now say that we are afraid of soldiers, I feel is discomfort and impotence because I think they abuse their authority. I remember when I was 16 years old I came from buying colored paper and I was assaulted in front of a soldier.

    3. I consider myself an overprotective person I think I would not let her leave home alone, or possible I would have left that place

    4. Maybe for being a small and simple place and because the person who told him the story lived there. According to studies, the country where the inhabitants are happiest and one of the best in the world to live.

  24. 1. Of course I would risk my life, BUT I would do it just for one of my parents or my grandmother, because they are the most important people for me. Also, for a child if I have the opportunity to be a mother.
    The circunstances will be:
    ● If one of them are in danger.
    ● If save their lifes depends of giving mine, for example: giving an organ.

    2. The girls were afraid because they knew the situation they were going through and they thought the soldiers could harm them.
I have never been afraid of soldiers, because I think they are not bad people and they just obey orders.

    3. If I were their mother I would just advice them to be cautious and don't get into troubles, there is not anything else I could do because they are the ones who had the power.

4.●Denmark and German were close and it ease them the transportation of weapons, trucks and other stuff.
●Denmark was very small and easy to invaded.
●To German people, Denmark was a strategic point because of its land and troops.

    3. If I were their mother, I would only have advised them and say the consequences that are experienced when not walking carefully.

    4. For one of the reasons that Germany invaded that country was to conquer Great Britain and Great Britain was the first country that invaded the second part of Denmark. Denmark was easy to conquer because of its small territorial extension.

The girls felt afraid because they did not look at their souldiers whit those characteristics also because they ask a lot of questions trying to make them nervous.
I have never beenafraid of soldiers ,I remember in my childhood when the soldiers arrived to house of my grand mother to buy food whit large weapons and very serius,I remenber when they came to recruit young people to the village.
2-As a fatherI would explain how talk with that soldiers and why they are on the street.
Also I would go to bring them at school because is dangerous walk on the street if the country is in war.
3- The reasoon that the writer write this book can be:
The situation that people lived in that country in war and try to show why the countries can not live in war.
To show what mean for the people to see soldiers with another personal characteristics and the way how they try to the people.

I am willing to risk my life for someone under any circumstances because if you want to help, you just do it!

2.-the girls were afraid to the soldiers because they asked them some curiously questions, also one of them had a stern voice and they carried weapons.
I never have been afraid to the soldiers, but if I would be front foreign soldiers, I were afraid.

3.- I would have exactly what his mother did, also and try to advice them, I would cut their hair.

4.- Tha author chose Denmark, because had a strategic location is small and had own small securty, was neutral nation.

  31. 1. Yes, I would risk my life only for some child I think that seeing him in danger, my reaction would be to try to help him.

    2. The girls were scared because the soldiers asked them a lot of questions, Ellen was afraid that the soldiers would realize that she was Danish. Yes, I have been afraid of the soldiers now it is not known if they are the real soldiers or anyone disguised as a soldier because there have been cases in which they steal police clothes.

    3. First of all, I would explain to them the situation that the country is going through because of the war and it would prevent them from talking to strangers to protect them.

    4. I believe that the author will reflect the following three historical data to create his story:

    * Occupation of Denmark by Nazi Germany this was during World War II from 1940-May 1945.

    * The model and ideology imposed by Adolf Hitler.

    * As of 1943 the Germans imposed repressive measures against the Danes due to the increase of clandestine resistance.

  32. 1-if I would be willing to risk my life for another person for the simple reason that you never know what can happen in life and if you help someone who needs it you can always count on that person since she will be aware that you can offer her life own for hers, good under the circumstances that could take that kind of risk is if they want to cause some kind of damage such as hitting or bullying.

2-I think the girls were afraid of the soldiers because they were Jewish and because the soldiers were in charge of killing the Jews and they were afraid of dying,I've never been afraid of soldiers because here in Honduras it has never been seen that soldiers kill a person just because they belong to a different religion.

3-It is an excellent question in this case the advice that I would have given them but as a father would have been to take care of each other and to get away from the soldiers because they were dangerous.

4-One of the reasons why the author chose that place could have been because Denmark is a small place the second reason because they did not have the ability to defend themselves and did not have the necessary weapons and the conquest was easy and third would be THE facility to mobilize weapons and that was a strategic point for any attack to be carried out.

    • Maybe the girls were afraid because in that time all the people who lived near Germany were being repressed by the Nazis, so the people in this small country were afraid for the narcissism situation and the parents transmitted their fear to their children.
    • I've never been afraid of a soldier yet.

    • If I were her mother, I would tried to transmit peace and advise them too like her mother.

    • Because that city was close to Germany.
    • Maybe the author met someone very important to her from that place.
    • For all the references we have of the situation that people lived in that place during the Second World War
